The Sma' Kist (Tool Chest) The Sma' Kist (Tool Chest)

The DIY furniture making manual for the sma'kist (tool chest) is a comprehensive colour guide with step-by-step instructions, detailing how to make this traditional piece of quality Scottish wooden furniture.

Although the sma'kist has been fitted up as a tool chest, it can be used for many other purposes. As the top of kists tend to split as a result of the wood shrinking when it meets central heating, our design suggests that you dry joint the top.

Traditionally, tops were always nailed on then punched and filled, however our DIY project manual suggests that you dowel the top on so that the fixings are hidden.

The manual also suggests the fitting of a strap (a leather strap can be supplied as an optional extra) as it doesn't interfere with the movement of the inner tray.

This woodworking project is aimed at intermediate level; we recommend that inexperienced woodworkers complete one of our first three projects (the creepie stool, the corner unit or the bread box) before tackling the sma' kist or more advanced furniture making projects
