Aberdeen Woodworking Classes: The projects

Project 1: The Scottish Creepie Stool (beginners)

A traditional Scottish creepie stool in quality Scottish red pine. Although it is difficult to trace the origins of the creepie stool design, this piece of furniture was most definitely part of North East Scottish culture - creepie stools were made and used here. You can often find the stools on display in folk museums and stately homes.

We encourage woodworking beginners to start with this project, which covers all the basic skills of using hand tools to make furniture in wood.

Price £60.

Photographs and further information are available here.

Project 2: The Bread Box (beginners)

This design was created by Lethenty Mill Furniture owner, Allan Fyfe, and is in the tradition of the vernacular using dovetails, a solid housed base and a hardwood (beech) breadboard as a top. The bread box is a difficult introductory furniture-making project, helping the beginner develop precision or getting the out-of-practice woodworker back into the skill.

Price £67.90.

Photographs and further information are available here.

Project 3: Solid Wooden Stool (beginners)

The solid wooden stool uses a very simple and economical traditional construction. More commonly used for tables, it is similar in construction to the front of a Chammer chair. The stool can be made in two different sizes (450mm or 600mm high), using two different types of joints (dowelled or mortice and tenoned). Please choose your preferred project from the options below.

Option 1: 450mm high (dowelled/mortice and tenoned): Price £65.50.

Option 2: 600mm high (dowelled/mortice and tenoned): Price: £70.40.

Photographs and further information are available here.

Project 4: The Sma' Kist (intermediate)

Learn how to make a traditional wooden sma' kist (tool chest) with movable inner tray. Although the sma'kist has been fitted up as a tool chest, it can be used for many other purposes. This woodworking project is aimed at intermediate level; we recommend that inexperienced woodworkers complete one of the beginners' projects (the creepie stool or the bread box) before tackling the sma' kist or more advanced furniture making projects.

Price £152.16.

Photographs and further information are available here.
